Headaches,
Migraines and Chiropractic
Headache is
humanity's most common pain. Sooner or later nearly all of us
get one. But about 20 percent of the population, headaches are
more than an occasional discomfort; they are chronic or recurrent.
A headache is no simple condition; there are more than 20 varieties.
One variety alone, the migraine, has five sub-varieties. Each
different kind of headache can have a different cause as well.
There are headaches caused by inhaling the fumes of noxious chemicals,
looking at intense bright lights, sinus trouble or eye problems,
high blood pressure, diseased teeth, ear problems vision problems,
fevers, infections, tumors, the side effects of drugs... the causes
are numerous.
Rather than relying on drugs to treat the pain associated with
headaches, an approach that overlooks the underlying cause of
the pain, the chiropractic approach centers on adjusting the body
to be better able to correct the malfunction causing the headache.
Removing spinal nerve stress permits the body to restore itself
to agreater level of health and wholeness; in effect, to heal
itself.
Chiropractic spinal care is essential for anyone who suffers from
headaches. This is not because chiropractic is a headache treatment,
which it is not, but because for everyone who wants to have a
healthy body, a healthy spial column is the first order of the
day.

Shoulder,
Arm and Hand Problems
Problems
with the neck, shoulder and arm are often called different things
by patients: neuritis, bursitus, neuralgia, rheumatism, frozen
shoulder, fibrositis , sprained, strained or sore muscles, or
"poor circulation". Some people may blame their shoulder or other
joint pain on "old age", even though their other shoulder, which
doesn't have any problems, is just as old.
The brachial plexus is a complicated nerve network that originates
in the middle and lower neck and upper back, and branches off
to supply different areas, especially the shoulders, arms, elbows,
wrists, hands and fingers. The most common form of brachial plexus
damage occurs to the nerves as they exit the spinal column through
a hole surrounded by a ring of spinal bone and other hard tissue.
If the hole is compressed due to spinal stress, injury, accident,
arthitis, or the stresses and strains of daily living, the nerves
can become compressed or "pinched". Depending on which brachial
plexus nerves are damaged, different symptoms and problems may
be experienced. Neck pain or neck stiffness may be one of the
first signs. In some people the pain may radiate to the shoulder
and down to the arm, wrist, hand or finger. Sometimes there's
extremity pain but not neck pain. Sometimes there's no pain but
numbness, a sure sign of nerve damage. "Pins and needles" of the
fingers or other areas can be a sign of brachial plexus problems,
while weakness of the invloved parts also may occur.
Althoug
h chiropractic's success with problems relating to spinal
nerve injury and brachial plexus symptoms is well documented,
it is not a treatment for those problems. The chiropractic approach
to a person's health problems is very different from the medical
approach. Rather than treat a condition a patient has, the chiropractor
concentrates on the health of the patient. The chiropractor specializes
in analyzing your spinal column for vertebral subluxations and
correcting them when found. In this way the chiropractor helps
restore the healthy flow of nerve impulses between the brain and
body parts.

Colds,
Flu and Respiratory Diseases
Chiropractic
and the common flow? But chiropractic is justs for backs! Not
so. In fact, many people seeing chiropractors for spinal pain
find a general improvement in the health that includes fewer and
less severe colds and other respiratory problems.
The common cold is associated with viruses that affect the nose,
throat, larnyx and sinuses. Breathing in the cold viruses does
not in itself cause a cold. For For cold and flu viruses to grow
they must find a hosts who has a body with weakened natural resistance.
Chiropractic doesn't treat the common cold or flu. It does, however,
help raise our natural resistance to disease. Natural resistance
is the only reason colds, flu and other respiratory disease "go
away" rather than last for weeks, months or an entire lifetime.
Chiropractic care helps raise our natural resistance to disease
by removing a serious interference to our natural healing ability;
Spinal nerve stress and vertebral subluxations. Keeping the spinal
column free of vertebral subluxations, which inhibit the flow
of information and energy between the brain and the rest of your
body, helps keep natural immunity high.

Spinal
Subluxation
Our
bodies are amazingly complex structures. Nerve messages are what
regulate bodily functions: breathing, digestion, heartbeat, excretions,
hormones, glands, muscles-- if nerves are irritated, the brain's
ability to communicate with and regulate the body is affected.
A vertebral or spinal subluxation, like brain damage or strike,
interfers with the proper functioning of the nervous system, the
spinal column and ultimately the entire body. It creates incordination
in the forces that control and coordinate the body. That creates
"disease", lowers resistance to disease and paves the
way for ill health. It is sometimes called the "silent killer"
because it can slowly eat away at a person's health and vitality
for years without that person having the slightest awareness of
it. Doctors of chiropractic specialize in locating, analyzing
and correcting vertebral subluxations.
Vertebral subluxations occur when one or more vertebrae are out
of proper alignment, causing the opening between the vertebrae
through which nerves travel to be narrowed. This pinching interferes
with nerve messages between the brain and the body. Stress is
the main cause of subluxation. either macro-stress caused by accidents,
falls or other injuries, or micro-stress caused by repeated movements
that gradually wear down the body parts.
Periodic spinal examinations to locate and correct vertebral subluxations
should be a part of every family's health routine. Correcting
silent subluxations today might save you and your family from
diseases that later could not possibly be ignored.

Accidents,
Injuries and Chiropractic
Anyone who
has been in any accident should make sure that the trauma has
not misaligned their spinal column and caused nerve damaging vertebral
subluxation . Only a chiropractor is trained analyze the spine
this way.
Most accidents are minor. In those cases chiropratcic should be
sought out as soon as possible. Too often severe health problems
begin as a little fall, whiplash, bump, or shakeup that may have
caused some pain initially but was later forgotten. Millions of
people leave emergency rooms unaware that are carrying around
hidden spinal distortions that may cause sebere health problems
later.
Even serious accidents, chiropractic care is helpful. In such
situations it is necessary to first attend to any life-threatening
emergency such as bleeding or hemorrhage, lack of breathing, internal
organ damage , broken bones, shock or other serious injury. This
is the specialty of the medical profession, dealing with trauma.
But after the medical doctors have done their work the body should
receive the chiropractic care that will help restore communications
lines between the brain and the body that can be seriously interupted.
Without chiropractic care residual problems may linger for months
or even years after an accident. Pain or muscle spasms in the
neck, shoulders, arms, wrists, hands, legs, back, face or head
all can result from failing to get the proper chiropractic following
an accident.
Chiropractic care also helps restore a persons immune system,
which may be weakened after an accident due to trauma. Restoring
a weakened immune can prevent serious health conditions that often
develop after an accident. Without this care, victims may continue
to take pain killers, muscle
relaxants, various therapies or repeated
surgery for years after the accident. There people are often told
that nothing more can be done, that they will just have to learn
to live with their problems. They need to know that in many cases
chiropractic care may totally eliminate or greatly reduce their
problems safely, quickly and without drugs or surgery.

Sports,
Athelitics and Chiropractic
Many People
watching the summer Olympic games in Seoul Korea, in 1998 saw
Greg Louganis, winner of two gold medals, strike his head on the
diving platform during the diving competition. They did not see
Jan Corwin, a U.S. chiropractor on the Olympic Committee staff,
deliver a spinal adjustment to Louganis' spine immediately after
the accident. All they knew was that Louganis was able to return
to the board and win another gold medal for diving.
An isolated occurance? By no means. Olympic wrestlers, NFL football
players and other professional atheletes rely on chiropractors.
Throughout the United States chiropractors are "team doctors"
for professional as well as elementary, junior high and high school
football, basketball, baseball, hockey, handball, rugby, soccer
and other sports teams. These chiropractors help keep the atheletes
on the field and help stop minor injuries from becoming major
ones without the use of drugs or surgery.
Chiropractic
care balances the spinal column and relieves mechanical and structural
stress on the nervous system. Sports injuries nearly always jar
and misalign the spinal column. This, anyone who plays any sport
needs regular chiropractic spinal checkups to ensure his or her
spine is balanced and free from structural stress ans subluxations.

Disk
Problems/Back Surgery
Today researchers
are in general agreement that disc lesions are the single most
common cause of lower back pain. The disc that cushion and seperate
the vertebrae may start showing signs of wear and tear as early
as age 15.
